Chesters Roman Amphitheatre - 1.1 miles
Chester's Roman amphitheatre is the largest of its kind in Great Britain. Believed to have been constructed sometime in the late 70s AD by Legion II Adiutrix Pia Fidelis ('Dutiful and Faithful'). After 40 years of hard labour by many committed arcbhaeologists the Amphitheatre was opened to the public in 1972. Today in warm weather, visitors can find a team of expert archaeologists working on large-scale excavation efforts in an effort to discover how the space was used in Roman times. Chester City Walls - 4.0 miles
Chester City Walls consist of a defensive structure built to protect the city of Chester in Cheshire, England. Their construction was started by the Romans when they established the fortress of Deva Victrix between 70 and 80 AD. It originated with a rampart of earth and turf surmounted by a wooden palisade. From about 100 AD they were reconstructed using sandstone, but were not completed until over 100 years later. These are the most complete Roman Walls in Grat Britain. The walls are now a major tourist attraction, and form an almost complete circuit of the former medieval city, providing a walkway of about 1.2 miles.
